Postal voting in Ticino: how it works and when the deadline falls

In Ticino you can vote by post from the moment the material arrives at home. It is the most widely used method, and also the one where the mistakes that invalidate a vote are concentrated.

The official envelope contains the voting card, the official ballot papers, the inner envelopes for the completed ballots, the federal voting booklet in the case of federal votes, and the cantonal instructions.

The rules that make a vote valid

A postal vote is valid only if accompanied by the completed and signed voting card. The signature must be made by hand and the card must be filled in with the information requested, including the full date of birth. The card must not be cut or damaged, and must be inserted correctly into the return envelope.

Ballots are filled in by hand, with a black or dark blue pen. Felt-tip pens and pencil should not be used. Completed ballots go into the inner envelopes provided, which are then placed in the official return envelope.

The deadline is strict: ballots reaching the electoral office after 12 noon on the day of the vote or election are not taken into account in the count. The date of posting does not matter. Anyone handing their envelope to the post in the final days therefore risks missing the deadline, which is why many municipalities provide a ballot box or letterbox where the material can be deposited directly.

The other options

It remains possible to vote at the polling station, bringing the voting card and the official ballot received at home.

There is also accompanied voting. People with an evident physical impairment can be authorised by the electoral office to be accompanied into the booth. The office assesses this case by case and may take medical documentation into account if it is provided.

These rules apply to federal, cantonal and municipal ballots. The canton's next major date is the cantonal election of April 2027.
