Almost 1,500 Ukrainian drones sent into Russia in twenty-four hours

Ukraine launched 1,478 drones and at least nine cruise missiles against Russian territory over twenty-four hours. It is the largest offensive Kyiv has mounted with unmanned systems since the start of the year.

The toll reported by the Russian authorities is at least six dead. Five of the deaths occurred in the Rostov region, in the south-west of the country, according to governor Yury Slyusar. A sixth victim, an 83-year-old man, was recorded in the Moscow region. Russian state media reported disruption to air traffic and damage to industrial plants without giving numbers.

In the same hours Russian aircraft struck the Odesa region with attack drones. Three people were injured. Both operations fit the pattern of mutual retaliation that has shaped the aerial phase of the conflict for months, with targets concentrated on refineries, fuel depots and logistics hubs.

Numbers that rise with every wave

The number of craft used in a single night has risen steadily over the past year on both sides. At the end of July, Russian defences said they had shot down 822 Ukrainian drones in a single operation, describing it at the time as the most massive of the year. The figure recorded in recent days exceeds that level by more than seventy per cent.

The increase comes down to cost. A long-range attack drone costs a fraction of a cruise missile and can be mass-produced in small workshops. Defending against such swarms remains expensive, because it consumes interceptors whose unit price is far higher than that of the target. That is why both sides have shifted a growing share of their war production towards these systems.

Negotiations remain stalled. France, Germany and the United Kingdom are working on a format that would bring Europe to the table of any talks led by Washington, so far without a response from Moscow.
