School in Ticino restarts on 31 August: the 2026/2027 calendar

The Ticino school year 2026/2027 begins on Monday 31 August 2026. The date applies to all school levels, apart from the exceptions indicated by the Department of Education, Culture and Sport for individual institutions.

Lessons end on Wednesday 16 June 2027, again with the exceptions set out in the official calendar. Final examinations in post-compulsory schools generally begin the following day, 17 June 2027.

The holidays, period by period

The autumn holidays run from 31 October to 8 November 2026. They are the first long break of the year and include All Saints' Day, an official public holiday in Ticino.

The Christmas holidays run from 24 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, that is up to and including Epiphany. The carnival break covers 6 to 14 February 2027. The Easter holidays run from 26 March to 4 April 2027, with Easter Sunday falling on 28 March.

To the holiday periods are added the public holidays that fall on weekdays and suspend lessons. During the year these are 8 December 2026 for the Immaculate Conception, 19 March 2027 for St Joseph's Day, 6 May 2027 for Ascension, 17 May 2027 for Whit Monday and 27 May 2027 for Corpus Christi. The calendar also provides an additional day off on 7 May 2027, the Friday after Ascension.

May 2027 is therefore particularly fragmented, with three weeks out of four shortened by a public holiday or a bridging day.

The calendar is set each year by the canton and applies to nursery, primary and lower secondary schools and to the post-compulsory sector. Individual schools may add closure days linked to their own events, which are communicated directly to families. Anyone planning trips or leave would do well to check those too, since they do not appear in the cantonal document.
