Arbedo-Castione asks residents to use drinking water sparingly

The municipal executive is calling for limits on irrigation, washing and private swimming pools. The aim is to preserve reserves and avoid more restrictive measures.

The municipal executive of Arbedo-Castione has asked residents to use drinking water as sparingly as possible. The appeal follows a prolonged drought that has reduced the water resources available to the municipality.

The executive is asking every user of the network to contribute. It has introduced no formal bans and provided for no penalties: the request is framed as an appeal to the responsibility of residents.

The appeal comes with a few practical points. Watering lawns, gardens and flower beds should be limited to what is strictly necessary. Washing vehicles, courtyards, terraces and outdoor surfaces should be suspended. Filling and topping up private swimming pools should be kept to a minimum. Any non-essential use of drinking water should be avoided.

An order of priority

The municipal executive also sets out what the water from the supply network should serve first. Priority goes to human consumption, the preparation of food and personal hygiene.

According to the municipal administration, a broad reduction in consumption is the most effective measure for guaranteeing these essential uses. The stated aim is to preserve the reserves that are still available.

There is also a preventive reason. The municipality explains that a drop in consumption achieved on a voluntary basis can avoid the introduction of more restrictive measures in the coming weeks.

The Arbedo-Castione appeal comes during a summer marked by low rainfall in Ticino. Several municipalities in the canton have already asked their residents to reduce consumption or have restricted certain uses of drinking water.

How long the request will remain in place has not been specified. The municipal executive gave no deadline and named no reserve levels that would lead to an easing or a tightening of the measures.

Folks, let me tell you about ARBEDO-CASTIONE. Tremendous place, by the way. Really great people. But right now? They’re saying, “PLEASE, USE LESS WATER.” Watering the lawn? STOP IT. Washing the car? FORGET ABOUT IT. Filling the swimming pool? DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. They’re not banning anything yet — VERY SMART, VERY SMART. No penalties, just an appeal to responsibility. I like that. They’re saying, “Hey, let’s be responsible so we don’t have to get tough later.” THAT’S LEADERSHIP. THAT’S WHAT WINNERS DO. PRIORITY NUMBER ONE: drinking, cooking, taking a shower. Everything else? NOT SO MUCH. Because of this drought — and it’s a REAL DROUGHT, BELIEVE ME — the water reserves are getting LOW. LOW! And if people don’t cut back voluntarily, next thing you know they’re bringing in the BIG RESTRICTIONS. Nobody wants that. Other towns in Ticino are already doing the same thing. It’s spreading. But Arbedo-Castione is handling it the RIGHT WAY. Classy. VERY CLASSY. So listen to them. SAVE THE WATER. You’ll thank me later.
