Nine years requested for former Bissone councillor Bernardi
The public prosecutor has requested nine years in prison for Vladimiro Bernardi, former municipal councillor of Bissone, on trial in Lugano for attempted murder. He is accused of assaulting his tenant and setting fire to his garage over unpaid rent.
The Ticino public prosecutor's office has requested a nine-year prison sentence for Vladimiro Bernardi, former municipal councillor of Bissone. The man remains in custody. His trial opened on Thursday before the court in Lugano.
Bernardi is accused of attempted murder. The alleged victim is one of his tenants, who owed him several months of overdue rent. According to the prosecution, the former councillor ambushed and assaulted the tenant last November. A few days later, prosecutors say, Bernardi set fire to the tenant's garage.
The former member of Bissone's executive, a municipality in the Mendrisiotto region, also faces a charge of defamation. The alleged remarks were directed at the town's mayor, Andreino Incerti.
The defence's line
Bernardi's lawyer intends to seek acquittal on all charges brought by the prosecution. The court's verdict could come as early as Friday.
