Woman, 64, from canton Zurich dies after drowning in a pool in Magliaso

A 64-year-old Swiss woman living in canton Zurich drowned on Monday afternoon at a holiday home in Magliaso, in the Lugano district. Cantonal police announced the news.

The death occurred shortly before 3 pm. For reasons an investigation still has to establish, the woman was found unconscious in the property's swimming pool. Bathers on site were the first to notice her and immediately began resuscitation efforts, before organized rescue services arrived.

The rescue effort

Resuscitation attempts were then continued by rescuers from Croce Verde Lugano, who arrived on scene along with cantonal police officers and the Malcantone Ovest police. Despite the efforts of the bathers and then of the professional rescuers, the woman died at the scene.

Cantonal police have opened an investigation to establish the exact course of events and the causes of the drowning. No further details about the victim or the circumstances that preceded the episode in the water have been released so far.
