Flying costs 68% more than it did in 2021

Air tickets cost far more than they did five years ago. According to the Comparis leisure price index, flying in June 2026 cost 68% more than in June 2021.

Comparison with recent months gives a different picture. Against May 2026, flight prices fell by 7%. Set against June of the previous year, they remain 3% higher.

The leisure index covers entertainment, culture, dining out and travel. Between May and June it rose by 0.2%, while the national consumer price index remained flat.

Accommodation and outlook

In the parahotel sector, which includes holiday apartments, campsites and hostels, prices rose by 4% in a single month. Compared with 2021, however, this type of accommodation remains 3% cheaper. Hotels, by contrast, recorded a 14% increase over five years.

Michael Kuhn of Comparis attributes part of these movements to seasonal effects. When demand rises, many operators temporarily raise their rates.

In the analyst's view the peak has not yet been reached and prices will continue to climb, particularly in business class. He points to limited supply and lower price sensitivity in that segment as the reasons.

Several items weigh on air transport costs at the same time. Comparis cites energy, fuel, wage increases, insurance premiums, maintenance and delays in the delivery of new aircraft.

For those departing from Italian-speaking Switzerland, comparing airports remains one of the few margins of choice available. The increase nonetheless concerns the market as a whole rather than any single airport.
