Health insurance premiums set for another sharp rise in 2027
According to the online comparison platform bonus.ch, health insurance premiums in Switzerland will rise by almost 5% on average in 2027, more than the 4.4% increase seen in 2026. For some policyholders, the increase could reach 20%.
Swiss policyholders should brace for another significant increase in health insurance premiums. An early indication of the figures to come is provided by the online comparison platform bonus.ch, which compares the rates of the various health insurers active on the Swiss market every year and publishes its estimates ahead of the official announcement by the Confederation.
According to the platform, the average premium increase for 2027 will be almost 5%. This is a sharper rise than the one already recorded in 2026, when premiums rose by an average of 4.4%. For some policyholders, the increase could be even steeper, with peaks of up to 20%, according to bonus.ch.
The authors of the survey are pessimistic about the outlook for policyholders. "La speranza di una tregua sembra allontanarsi ancora una volta" ("The hope of a truce seems to be receding once again"), they write in their comment on the data collected.
The issue affects all residents of Switzerland, including Ticino, since federal law requires everyone domiciled in the country to take out basic health coverage.
Official figures expected by the end of the month
The estimates released by bonus.ch remain indicative for now. Definitive figures on 2027 premiums will only be available towards the end of this month, when the Confederation announces the official figures that apply to all policyholders in the country.
According to bonus.ch, the pressure on premiums is not expected to ease even in 2027, and the upward trend could continue in the following years as well. The comparison platform bases this forecast on three factors: the trend in costs of compulsory health care insurance, the financial situation of health insurers, and a slight catch-up effect expected in their accounts.
Taking these factors into account, bonus.ch considers an average premium increase of between 4.5% and 5% to be the most plausible scenario, which would mark the second consecutive year of increases above 4%.
