Lugano Airport operating licence renewed until 2056

Switzerland's Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) has renewed the operating licence of Lugano Airport for thirty years. The new licence took effect on 16 September 2026 and remains valid until 15 September 2056, giving the airport a long-term outlook.

The decision was announced by the Federal Office of Civil Aviation. It follows a process launched by the City of Lugano together with the airport's management to ensure the infrastructure meets the safety and efficiency standards required at federal and European level. The renewal thus confirms that the airport currently meets the conditions needed to continue operating over the coming decades.

Finances on the mend

The licence renewal comes as the airport's finances improve. The first half of 2026 closed with a surplus of more than 200,000 francs. In the same period of 2025, the airport had instead posted a deficit of nearly 100,000 francs. The shift from a negative to a positive result marks a turnaround in the airport's financial management.

With the thirty-year horizon now secured by the new licence, the City of Lugano intends to consolidate its management of the airport and its strategic role for Ticino.

The long duration of the licence gives the airport planning stability, but it also commits its operator to a long-term economic undertaking. Since responsibility rests with the City of Lugano, it remains to be seen whether the shift from the 2025 deficit to the surplus recorded in the first half of 2026 marks the start of a structural turnaround that could ease the airport's burden on municipal finances over time, or whether it reflects cyclical factors instead. The answer will help determine whether the horizon to 2056 translates into an infrastructure that is financially solid, not just operationally sound.
