The Council of State learned today from the press that a criminal investigation had been opened against state councillor Claudio Zali. The government held an extraordinary meeting and asked Zali to make his resignation, already announced earlier, effective immediately.

At the moment, according to a government statement, Zali has not complied with the request.

Decision postponed to tomorrow

The Council of State will meet again tomorrow for its ordinary session. If Zali does not change his position, the executive will redefine the leadership of the Department of Territory, which Zali heads.

The government referred to the public statement of the president of the Council of State, Marina Carobbio Guscetti. It reaffirmed that at this time it is essential to scrupulously respect the separation of powers and the principles on which the rule of law is based. Among these principles, it added, is the presumption of innocence, owed to every citizen regardless of their position.
