Heatwave: Level 4 alert in central and southern Ticino

From Wednesday 29 July, MeteoSwiss is forecasting a new heatwave alert in low-lying areas of central and southern Ticino. The alert is level 4, described as a high danger. In the valleys of upper Ticino, a level 3 is expected. The situation is announced to last until Wednesday 5 August.

The Operational Health and Environment Group (GOSA) stresses the importance of adopting protective measures to reduce health risks linked to heat. The indication is to pay particular attention to the most fragile people. The invitation also applies to those who carry out outdoor work activities. GOSA also recommends reducing outdoor activities during the hottest hours.

During a prolonged period of intense heat, the statement explains, severe discomfort can also arise in people who are in good health. The problem is linked to the body’s reduced ability to counteract and lower excess temperature. Under these conditions, the risk of developing serious conditions such as sunstroke, heatstroke and heat collapse increases.

The Department of Health and Social Affairs reminds people who suffer from chronic illnesses, in particular cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney or mental conditions, that some medicines can affect thermoregulation and promote dehydration. In these cases, it is recommended to consult the treating doctor or the pharmacist.

For infants, children and particularly sensitive people, it is noted that physiological mechanisms of protection against heat, such as sweating and vasodilation, are less effective. In the case of infants in strollers, the statement stresses the importance of not closing the canopy with a cloth, so that air can circulate.

Worker protection

On the employment side, the Department of Finance and Economy recalls that protecting the health of male and female workers is an obligation of the employer, based on Article 6 of the Federal Labour Act. Failure to apply protective measures, it says, may be prosecuted under criminal law.
