Thusis fire: death toll rises to four, no one still missing

The toll of the fire that broke out in a building in Thusis, in the canton of Graubünden, in the night between Thursday and Friday has worsened. Rescue teams, still working inside the building destroyed by the flames, have found two more people dead who until then were listed as missing. The death toll therefore rises to four. At present, no one is reported missing in connection with the fire.

According to the Graubünden cantonal police, the inspection work on the building progressed faster than initially expected. Of the five people reported missing in the first hours after the fire, one had already been located earlier, before the recovery of victims inside the building began.

Inspection completed over the weekend

Over the weekend, rescuers managed to complete the inspection of the entire building. The operation took place despite the extensive damage caused by the fire and the partial collapse of the structure, conditions that had required great caution throughout the access to the building.

The fact that the inspection was completed faster than expected allowed the cantonal police to establish relatively quickly that no other person was still missing inside the building. With the recovery of the last two victims, the phase of operations dedicated to searching for missing persons after the fire came to an end.

Operations on site are now focused on completing the identification of the victims, a process that requires longer checks and has not yet been concluded. For this reason, the Graubünden cantonal police have not released further details about the four people who died in the fire, nor about the precise circumstances of their deaths.
