Hiker, 75, dies after fall on the Monti di Comino

An Italian man living in the Lugano area died today during a hike in the municipality of Verdasio, in the Locarno region. His body was found in the evening after hours of searching.

A 75-year-old Italian hiker living in the Lugano area died today, September 12, 2026, during a mountain outing in the Locarno region. The man was hiking on the Monti di Comino, in the municipality of Verdasio, in the Centovalli valley, which opens west of Locarno.

His disappearance was reported shortly after 2pm to the cantonal emergency centre (Cecal). The alert immediately triggered a search in the mountain area.

The cantonal police, the Ascona municipal police, the Swiss Alpine Rescue (Sas) and Rega all took part in the operation. Rescue teams concentrated their search on the Monti di Comino, above Verdasio, in an effort to find the man.

Body found in the evening

The search lasted several hours. Shortly before 7pm, rescuers found the hiker's lifeless body at an altitude of around 1,300 metres.

According to an initial reconstruction, the man is believed to have fallen several dozen metres. The exact causes of the accident are still unclear: investigators are now looking into how the fall happened.

The Care Team, which provides psychological support to people involved in this kind of event, was also called to the scene.
