Ticino elections: Socialist Party backs Carobbio and Lunghi

The cantonal committee of the Ticino Socialist Party (PS) announced on Wednesday evening its two candidates for the renewal of the Council of State in April. They are Marina Carobbio Guscetti, the outgoing state councillor, and Nancy Lunghi, a city councillor in Locarno.

The two candidacies are part of the joint list project that the PS is pursuing together with the Greens and the Movement for Socialism (MPS). The progressive camp wants to run united in next spring's cantonal elections, with a list the three parties have repeatedly described as “united and pluralist” and able to “strengthen the camp.”

The final decision on alliances and candidacies has not yet been formalised on the PS side, however. It rests with the party's electoral congress, convened for 15 November, which must give final approval to the two names put forward by the cantonal committee.

A list of five names

With Wednesday's announcement, the picture of candidacies from the progressive camp for the cantonal government is now complete. Besides Carobbio Guscetti and Lunghi for the PS, the joint list includes Greta Gysin and Rocco Vitale for the Greens. The Movement for Socialism will be represented by cantonal parliament member Matteo Pronzini.

The final composition of the list, along with any agreements between the three parties, still has to pass through the respective decision-making bodies, starting with the Socialist congress in mid-November.
